- Obituary for Joseph M Black
Joseph M. Black, 72, of North Tonawanda, surrounded by his loving family, passed away on August 11, 2024 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Sparks) Black. Survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Christine (Sarzyniak). Devoted father of Jeffrey (Meghan) and Daniel (Summer), grandpa of Jaret, Meredith and Derek, and “furbaby” Libby. Predeceased by brothers James and John Black, sister Bridget Winter, mother-in-law Carrie Sarzyniak and brother in-law Joseph Sarzyniak. Dear brother-in-law to Robert and Theresa Klimek, Patricia Sarzyniak, Brenda Black, and Robert Winter. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Joe worked at the 107th Air Refueling Air National Guard for 39 years, retiring in 2008 as a Life Support Technician, earning the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. For many years he worked part time at the Calspan Corporation. He was a volunteer firefighter and member of Columbia Hook and Ladder. He also belonged to the Fireman Benevolent Association and 3rd Ward Social Club.
Family and friends may call on Friday August 16th from 4 pm to 8 pm at Wattengel Funeral Home, located at 533 Meadow Drive, North Tonawanda, NY 14120. Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 17th at 9:30 am at St. Christopher Roman Catholic Church, 2660 Niagara Falls Blvd, Tonawanda, NY 14150. Immediately following the service, the family invites friends and loved ones to Sweeney Hose Company #7, 499 Zimmerman Street, North Tonawanda, NY 14120.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joe’s memory to the Niagara County SPCA (www.niagaraspca.org) and the Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org).
