Lee S. Blackman, a popular student of
the Lockport Union school, secretary of the
Niagara County Farmers'Club and son of
Isaac Blackman of Cambria, sustained fatal
injuries in a fall Wednesday evening.
The geology class, conducted by Prof.
Randall, made a trip up the canal to
Hitchin's bridge, looking for specimens.
At the quarry, where stone is being ob-
tained for the Buffalo breakwater, there is
an immense derrick 40 feet high. The
central timber has iron steps for the con-
venience of the workmen in adjusting the
guy ropes. In order to obtain a better
view of the nieghboring country the mem-
bers of the geologists party climbed the
derrick.
Blackman, instead of returning as the
others had done, swung out on the guy
ropes and began desending hand over
hand. To the horror of his comrades he
cried out that his muscle was failing him,
and when at a height of 25 feet fell to the
stones below.
He struck full on his stomach, His
injuries resulted in death last night.
