Sister Rosetta Amendola, OSF

TAMPA, FL — Elizabeth Ann Amendola died December 15, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital, Tampa, FL. She was born November 21, 1934 in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of Angelo and Rose Moretti Amendola of Niagara Falls, NY.
She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1953, and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1960.
Sister Rosetta Amendola faithfully lived the Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for over 60 years. In her hometown of Niagara Falls, she attended grade school at St. Joseph's Parish from 1939-49, and high school at both St. Mary's and St. Elizabeth Academy in Allegany, NY, graduating in 1952. Upon entering the convent, she continued her education at St. Elizabeth Teacher's College, now known as St. Bonaventure University, in Allegany, NY, receiving a B.S. degree in Education in 1967. During the summers to follow, Sister Rosetta went on to receive a M.S. degree in Education at Cortland State in Cortland, NY in 1973, as well as a M.S. degree in Religious education in 1978 from Fordham University in Bronx, NY.
Sister Rosetta ministered in education in several Congregational schools located throughout New York, New Jersey and Florida. She began teaching grades K-4 in Pompton Lakes, NJ in 1954, followed by a nine year assignment at Christ the King in Haddonfield, NJ. She then served as Superior Principal at St. Mary's in Port Jervis, NJ for several years. In 1969 she relocated to St. Petersburg, FL, continuing her ministry of religious education, a period of further study at Fordham University, in 1977. Upon completion of those courses, she assumed the duties of Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of Fatima in Piscataway, NJ, where she served until 1987. Sister then returned to Florida, continuing her ministry of religious education in several parishes located in Largo and the Tampa Bay area. In later years, in addition to serving as Pastoral Assistant for the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Tampa, she provided secretarial assistance to Catholic Health East and St. Joseph's Hospital.
In 2004, Sister Rosetta entered retirement, residing first at St. Clare Convent and later moving to St. Elizabeth Convent, both of Tampa, FL.
Sister Rosetta was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her brother, John of Las Vegas, NV and sister, Patricia Custode of Niagara Falls, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
A wake service is scheduled for December 20, 2013, at 6:30 PM in the Chapel of the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, NY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial December 21, 2013, at 10:30 AM in the Chapel of the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, with burial to follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 East State Street, Olean, NY.
