John J. H. Meier, 83, of Backus
Rd., Derby, who was in charge of
the mounted police detail which
escorted President William Mc-
Kenley to the Pan-American Ex-
position here, will be buried in
the Church of Evans Cemetery,
Derby, tomorrow afternoon. He
died Monday.
The Rev. Earle W. Gates, min-
ister of First Church of Evans,
will conduct funeral services at
1:30 tomorrow at the Carlton A.
Ullrich Funeral Home, 3272
Bailey Ave.
Mr. Meier later was one of
about 150 Buffalo policemen who
dispersed the crowd trying to
take the President's assailant,
Leon Czolgosz, from jail after he
shot McKlnley.
He served on the police force
for nearly 30 years before he
retired in 1927. After his retirement
Mr. Meier and his wife, the
former Catherine Bodamer, who
survives, operated a 52-acre farm
at Derby until 1945.
Mr. Meier at one time was a
member of the 74th Infantcy Regiment,
New York National Guard;
a past grand commander of the
Ancient and Illustrious Order of
the Knights of Malta; a past president
of the Golden Anniversary
Club of Buffalo and a member of
Garrison 65, Army & Navy Union,
USA.
Other survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. Elmer Oetinger,
Mrs. Frank .May, Mrs. Louis Sommer
and Mrs. Julius Wolfrum;
two sons, Henry G. and Howard;
three sisters, Mrs. Richard Jaeger,
Mrs. Charles Jaeger and Mrs.
Elizabeth Hedden; eight grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
