Very Reverend Father George R. Aswad

The Very Reverend Father George R. Aswad, of Grand Island, NY, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014, in Hospice Buffalo. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on December 7, 1926 the son of the late Fred and Fahda (Sorour) Aswad.
Fr. George served in World War II enlisting into the Navy in 1944 and served aboard the USS Helena. He toured a round-the-world cruise in 1946 and was discharged in August 1946 from the Navy. He was employed in the traffic office at Hooker Chemical Corporation and was a regular and special education teacher in the Niagara Falls Public School System. Rev. Aswad graduated from Niagara Falls High School and earned a Bachelors Degree from Niagara University. In 1967, he graduated from Buffalo State College with a Master of Science in Education.
Fr. George was ordained as a deacon in 1961 having completed studies in the St. Stephen's School of Theology and then elevated to the priesthood in 1965. He faithfully served the parishioners of St. George Orthodox Church in Lewiston, NY, retiring in 1996, and continued on to serve as Priest Emeritus. Fr. George was elevated to Archpriest and was the recipient of the Antonian Gold Medal of Merit. Fr. George was a devoted Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan. He enjoyed participating in sports, particularly running, and was an avid swimmer. He will be remembered for his vision, kind and caring heart, and gift for helping others. Fr. George is truly loved and cherished by his family who brought him great happiness and pride.
Fr. George is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Khouryee Grace (Bishara) Aswad, they were married on February 10, 1957 at St. George Orthodox Church in Niagara Falls, NY. He was blessed with five daughters, Lynn (George) Wood of Paxton, MA, Laura (Jeff) Colyer of Cincinnati, OH, Louise (Bill) Snyder of North East, PA, Lisa (Mike) Dudley of Grand Island, NY and Lana (Paul) Dudley of Alexander, NY; eleven grandchildren, Jessica (Tracy), Jeana, Matthew, Andrew, Ryan, Rachel, Kara, Eric, Amber and Alyssa; two great-grandchildren, AJ and Jeffrey; two brothers, Samuel (late Patricia) and Dr. Alfred (Anna) Aswad. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family will be present at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church,1073 Saunders Settlement Road, Niagara Falls, NY, on Sunday from 3-7 PM and on Monday from 4-7 PM, Trisagion Prayers will be held on Sunday and Monday at 6:00 PM. The Funeral for a Priest will be Monday at 7 PM. The Divine Liturgy will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:15 AM, with His Grace Bishop ALEXANDER officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to St. George's Church. Internment with Military Honors will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Arrangements were made through the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME.
