While lying fatally injured In the
wreckage of hla automobile after the
machine and another car had collided
at Ferry avenue and Seventeeth
street on Sunday night, David R.
stivers of No. 1175 Haeberle avenue,
was robbed.of nearly $200 which he
carried in one Of the pockets of his
clothing, Police are convinced follow-
ing an investigation conducted by Detectives
John L Roeder and Terrence
M. Reilly,
The police are trying to determine
who was near- the automobiles following
the wreck In an effort to place
the responsibility for the robbery.
The detectives In their Investigation
learned, that Stivers was taken
into Memorial hospital by four men.
Nurses in the hospital said that the
men appeared to he foreigners. One,
however, the Investigators learned
was Paul Becker, who was with Stir
vers in his car when the accident occurred
and who-was injured. The
other man who assisted Becker in
getting his friend to the hospital
were located by the police and were
eliminated from suspicion of complicity
In the robbery.
The three men besides Becker who
assisted In taking Stivers to the hospital,
the detectives learned .were
with a Mrs. Colucci in her motor
truck. The truck came up to the scene
of the accident shortly after the crash
occurred. About 20 or 30 persons
were gathered about the wrecked cars
then. Mrs. Colucci told the detectives.
Some of the spectators, were searching
the ground. Mrs. Colucci saw-
Stivers unconscious on the ground
and, realizing that he was badly injured,
called to the three men in her
truck to get him to the hospital. He
was placed in the truck and Becker
accompanied him to the hospital,
Stivers was admitted to the hospital
at 10:10 o'clock on Sunday evening.
He died fifteen minutes later. Coroner
Harry R. Ernes went through his
clothing. The coroner found only a
watch, knife, fountain pen and 90
cents. This was placed In a package
and was turned over to Louis Boeldt,
Stivers' brother-in-law.
The detectives'established the truth
of the report that Stivers had the considerable
sum of money by Interviewing
William Crow, proprietor of a
gasoline station at Main street and
Cedar avenue. Crow told the detective
that. Stivers and Becker
bought five gallons of gasoline at his
place at 9:30 o'clock on Sunday, night.
Stivers paid for the gasoline by changing
a $10 bill. Crow said he noticed
that stivers had at least eight $10
bill in the roll from which he took
the one to pay for the gasoline. Crow
said he Jokingly asked Stivers where.
he got all the money and Stivers told
him that he had sold his Ford car.
The detectives reported to Detective
Chief George H. Calllnan that they
were satisfied that Stivers' was .robbed
while he law mortally Injured on
the ground near his wrecked automobile.
They are continuing their in-
vestigation and are rounding up per-
sons who were near the scene of the
crash in the hope that the will establish
the identity of the thieves.
