- Antonette “Ann” Conny, 96, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on December 11, 2020, in Schoellkopf Health Center in Niagara Falls, NY, following complications from Covid.
Born on January 8, 1924, in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Emanuel and Elizabeth Bongiovanni. Ann was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY. She attended local schools and graduated with honors from Niagara Falls High School.
On April 30, 1949, Ann married James V. Conny in the former St. Joseph Church (currently Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish). Ann loved telling the story of how Jim determined her wedding ring size by secretly wrapping a piece of string around her finger at the movie theater. The two met at Kimberly-Clark Corporation, where Ann was a machine operator and lab technician, and Jim was a millwright. After marriage, Ann devoted her time to raising a family.
Ann later returned to the workforce as a bookkeeper for Kmart in the Men’s Department until she retired in 1983. She liked telling of the time during the Blizzard of '77 when she was marooned at Kmart for three days. Ann had a lifelong interest in learning, taking enrichment classes in art, Italian, and horticulture. She was well known in her neighborhood for her talents in gardening, cooking, and baking. In particular, she taught neighbors and grandchildren how to make pizzelles and the Italian meatballs.
Ann was kind-hearted and a great storyteller who found humor in everything. She loved animals, especially dogs, and enjoyed birdwatching outside her kitchen window. Ann was an avid reader who read hundreds of books during her later life, many of which were donated to the residents' library at Schoellkopf Health Center.
Ann is survived by two children, Joanne (Charles) James of Newfield, NY, and Joseph (Beth) Conny of Frederick, MD; four grandchildren: Rebecca Ann James of Brooklyn, NY; Michael (Caroline) James of Dryden, NY; Julia Mende Conny of Parkville, MD; and Jenna Mende Conny of Baltimore, MD; and two great-granddaughters, Ava and Amelia James. Ann is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Carlson, and her brother, Carmen Bongiovanni.
There will be no public visitation. A private funeral service will be held at OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS NY (716-297-9007). Private prayers of committal and entombment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Memorial offerings in Ann’s name can be made to Niagara County SPCA.
