- Merton Garfield Myers, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on August 31, 2024, at the age of 94. He will be deeply missed by all. Merton Myers (or Mert, to those who knew him) was born on May 31, 1930 in Lewiston, NY., and grew up in Niagara Falls, NY. He graduated from LaSalle High School, in Niagara Falls, NY. He served under General MacArthur as an Honor Guard in postwar Tokyo, Japan from 1947-1949. Most of his working life, he was a car salesman in New York and Virginia. He was also a real estate agent in western New York and the former co-owner of Shutters and Boards bar and tavern in downtown Niagara Falls, NY.
Mert is survived by his daughter Cindy J. Barker and his sons Mark G. Myers (wife, D'Lynn), Michael G. Myers (wife, Bonnie) and Matthew G. Myers (wife, Laura), and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Fred Blackwell and his sister Elizabeth Blackwell, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends across the country.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margaret (Keetch) Myers; his parents Thomas Merton Myers and Lillian Mae (Currie) Blackwell; his stepfather John Blackwell; and his siblings Pearl, Dorothy, Marion, Lillian, John, Florence, Gloria and Leslie.
Mert loved camping, get-togethers with his family, hunting, fishing, and traveling all over the US and Canada.
No formal service will be held, there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Wounded Warriors Project, or the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
