- Frank 'Coach' Weiss, age 88, of Lewiston, died on Saturday, March 18, 2017 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, after a brief illness. Frank was born on December 4, 1928 in Adrian, PA, the son of the late Thomas and Eileen Weiss.
He grew up in Niagara Falls and was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School where he pitched a no hitter against LaSalle in 1946. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1947 and served until his honorable discharge in July of 1948. He received his B.A. from Ithaca College where he played on the soccer and baseball teams for four years. Frank received his Master's Degree in Education from Niagara University followed by his Guidance Certification. Frank was a Guidance Counselor and Coach at Lewiston-Porter Central School for 41 years, retiring in 1993. While at Lew-Port he began the school's soccer program, coaching the team for nine years, winning 3 league and 5 sectional titles; he coached the golf team for 23 years, winning or sharing the league championship 10 times; and coached the JV basketball and JV baseball for several years as well as the varsity tennis team for 8 years. In 1979 Frank received the Coach's Honor Award from the NY State Coaches Association. He was inducted into the Lewiston-Porter Athletic Hall of Fame (Coach) in 1982 and into the Niagara Falls Old Timers Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. An avid golfer, Frank was a member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club for over 50 years during which time he recorded two holes in one.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 57 years, Sandra; three daughters, Wendy (Joseph) Ehle, Jennifer (Frank) Smigielski, and LeeAnne Weiss; a sister, Betty Destino; six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Weiss; and a sister, Mary Sharrar.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Thursday from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 24th at 11:00 AM in St. Peter RC Church, 600 Center St., Lewiston, with the Rev. Msgr. David G. LiPuma officiating. (Please Assemble at Church). Burial with Military Honors will follow in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. #1 Ambulance Fund, 145 N. 6th St., P.O. Box 748, Lewiston, NY 14092.
