- SHAFER - Marcia Of Morrisville, VT, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. She was born November 12, 1935 in Williamsville, NY, the daughter of Leo H. Schmidt Jr. and Sylvia Steinbrenner Schmidt. She married J. Howard Shafer on May 23, 1959. He predeceased her on July 27, 1985. Marcia was proud of her Buffalo roots, nurturing a long-distance but lifelong passion for the Buffalo Bills. But it was in Vermont where she found her home, when she and her husband Howard first moved to Morrisville in 1971. Marcia worked as a Lister for the Town of Morristown for many years. She was an avid painter who became well known locally for her depictions of the scenery and lifestyle of the Green Mountain State and New England. In addition to her love of painting, Marcia was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Morrisville, where she was a long-time member of the church choir. Marcia is survived by her children, Scott Shafer and wife, Dorothea of Orchard Park, NY; Keith Shafer and wife, Emily of Livonia, MI and Brian Shafer and wife, Amy of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Andy, Alison, Alex, Rebecca, Maisy and Molly and a brother, Gary Schmidt of Williamsville, NY. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, J. Howard Shafer and a brother, Leo "Sonny" Schmidt III. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, September 20 at the First Congregational Church in Morrisville. Interment was in the Pleasant View Cemetery. White-Fiess Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marcia's memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, PO Box 475, Morrisville, VT 05661.
