Mrs. Laura May Russell, 409
Third St., who retired as supervisor
of the Niagara Falls High
School caferteria in 1939 after serving
for 28 years, died yesterday at a
Buffalo hospital at the age of 86.
She has been in poor health^for the
last year.
Mrs. Russell started preparing
meals at the old high school building
when students and teachers
lunched in a small rooom off the
gymnasium. She was known as
"Mother Russell" to many teachers,
students and successive principals.
Dr. Charles Dawson, principal in
1913, placed Mrs. Russell in charge
of the cafeteria. She served in that
capacitty until July 1, 1939, when
she retired.
Mrs. Russell was a native of
Olcott and the widow of the late
Frank Russell. She was a member
of the Riverdale Rebekah Lodge
No. 195 and of the Order of the
Eastern Star in this city.
Surviving are a son, Carl N.
Russell, this city, three daughters,
Mrs. Mabel McLaughlin, this city;
Mrs. Kenneth Cameron, Clarence;
and Mrs. John McAvinney, Kenmore.
She also is survived by four
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements at Cobler's
Funeral Home will be announced
later.
