- John Cappello, longtime resident of Niagara Falls, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 8, 2016 after a brief illness. He was 102. He was born in Platania, Italy on February 23, 1914, a son of the late Antonio and Giovanna (Torchia) Cappello.
He attended schools in Italy and then moved with his family to James City, Pennsylvania in 1928. John then moved to Niagara Falls in 1936, married Isabelle Napolitano in 1938 and they remained happily married for 69 years until her passing in 2006. He worked at Union Carbide for 35 years until his retirement in 1976.
He enjoyed bowling and gardening and was an accomplished saxophone player.
He is survived by three children: Joanne (Tom) Philbrick of Vero Beach, Florida, Caroline (late Vito) Lavango of Grand Island and John A. Cappello of Wilton Manors, Florida. He is also survived by two sisters: Angie (Pat) Scuttela and Mary (Eugene) Di Cello, sister-in-law Josephine (late Triest) Cappello, 6 grandchildren, 8
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by three siblings: Lucille (late Victor) Orzetti, Michael (late Frances) Cappello and Triest (Josephine) Cappello.
There will be no prior visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10 A.M. in St. John de LaSalle Church, 8477 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls. Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Niagara Falls. Arrangements made by LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC.
