- Born in Joliet, Illinois, Joan graduated from Albion High School, Cornell University and Cornell Law School, class of 1949, where she met and married her classmate, Benjamin N. Hewitt.
For most of their life, they lived in Niagara Falls, NY where Joan was a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch for 35 years. Upon retirement, she continued her advisory practice with LPL Financial. Active in community affairs throughout her career, she served as a trustee of Niagara County Community College, President of United Way of Niagara County, President of College Club of Niagara Falls and The Tatler Club, delegate to the 1976 Republican National Convention in Kansas City and an avid supporter of the Niagara Falls Public Library and the Niagara Falls Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Joan moved full time to their home in Fort Lauderdale in 2001, where she was a docent and active with the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, The Opera Society and the Lighthouse Point Chapter of the DAR.
Joan is survived by her two daughters, Susan Hewitt Fischer of Dallas, TX and Sarah Hewitt of New York City, and two granddaughters, Anne Hewitt Fischer and Caroline Hewitt Fischer, both of New York City. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Benjamin N. Hewitt.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by a private memorial service on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Kraeer-Fairchild Funeral Home in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Burial will be at Riverdale Cemetery in Lewiston, NY at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Broward County, FL.
