After the business meeting the
history of the Brotherton tree was
read by Mrs. Lillian Calkins as follows:
Great grandfather Brotherton
came from England and settled in
Massachusetts and later came to
New York State and settled in Medina.
Four children were born, 2
boys and 2 girls, namely Henry and
Joseph, Eliza and Rhoda, and later
moved to Grand Rapids, Mich.
Henry built up a lumber business
in Grand Rapids, making barrels,
and Joseph and the two girls came
back to New York and settled in
Wethersfleld. Henry had 6 children
named Lyda, Ella, Emma, Clara and
Otis, all living in Grand Rapids.
Joseph had 9 children, namely Lydia,
Emily, Carrie, Flora, George, William,
Gillman, Thomas and Emory.
There are 3 now living in Joseph's
family, namely, Flora Baker, George
and Emory Brotherton, and 15 grandchildren,
47 great grandchildren, 65
great great grand children and 14
great great great grandchildren. In
1870 a message came from England
of an inheritance of forty thousand
dollars but would have to go and
live in England to get the money, so
Henry and Joseph decided they would
rather stay in the United States.
