- Ivah Bernice Duncan (nee Dale) passed away peacefully in her home in Brevard, NC on November 15, 2016. She was 99 and 3/4 years old. Ivah was born in Newfane, NY on February 7, 1917, the daughter of the late Raymond and Blanche (Silsby) Dale. Ivah was the youngest of six children, all of whom have preceded her in death. Ivah married Wayne G. Duncan on April 14, 1937 in Niagara Falls, NY. Wayne preceded her in death on December 7, 2007. They lived in Youngstown, NY for almost 40 years where she was a homemaker and proud mother of three sons. They travelled extensively around the United States and Canada. Ivah and Wayne retired to Penrose, North Carolina in 1976 where they enjoyed hiking the many trails of Western North Carolina. Ivah took an active interest in her community volunteering for many years at Sharing House and Transylvania County Hospital where she was honored with a Distinguished Service Award for her many hours of service. Ivah was also an avid gardener, who took great pride and enjoyment in her beautiful gardens. She loved animals and enjoyed the company of her dog and cats. Ivah had a quick wit and there was always a twinkle in her eye. She will be missed but joyfully remembered by her sons and their wives, James (Rose) Duncan of Toledo, OH and Bruce (Marie) Duncan of Grand Island, NY. She was preceded in death by her son Dale Duncan of Youngstown, NY, his wife Georgia survives. Ivah is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; Michelle (James Champ) Duncan of Mills River, NC; Jennifer Duncan of Midlothian, VA; Jacob Green (Bill Onderko) of Chicago, IL; Kevin (Maribeth) Duncan of Grand Island, NY and their daughter, Samantha; Kelly (Bryan) Jans of West Seneca, NY; Jim (Sue) Duncan of Newfane, NY and their children, Kyle and Connor; Jerry Duncan of Youngstown, NY and his children, Lucas, Ethan and Dylan; John (Kim) Duncan of Murrieta, CA and their children, Sarah and Zachary. Ivah was preceded in death by her grandson, Jeffrey. The family would like to acknowledge their overwhelming appreciation to Ivah's companion caregivers, Kerria Hemphill, Carly Blekicki and Mary Cornett with a special salute to her granddaughter Michelle ( Drill Sargent) who moved to Brevard after her Grandpa died so Grandma would have someone from the family close by. Michelle was always there for her Grandma. Also Bobby Wilson, who has been part of the family for over 40 years, and Bobby Woods, both took care of Ivahs flower garden, yard, and furry friends. There will be a private family service. If you would like to honor Ivah's memory, donations may be made to Transylvania Regional Hospital Hospice, 1266 Asheville Hwy, Brevard, NC 28712.
