- Robert J. Wegrzyn, Sr., of the Town of Niagara, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 in the Hospice Care Unit at Northgate Health Care Facility in North Tonawanda, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY. He was the son of the late Stanley and Victoria (Lopacki) Wegrzyn.
Robert was a lifelong resident of the Niagara Falls area. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School. On June 9, 1962 he married Mary E. (Bauman) Wegrzyn in Bloomsburg, PA. Mrs. Wegrzyn predeceased him on August 29, 2014. He was employed as a Purchasing Manager for Carborundum (Unifrax) Corp. in Niagara Falls, NY for 45 years. When he was younger he played fast pitch softball and in 2006 he was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments. He was a member and served as a past president of the NW Community Boosters Club. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and especially enjoyed going hunting with his son Bob. He also loved traveling in his motor home with his family. They traveled all over the Northeast. But most of all, Bob (Pop Pop) lived to watch and support his grandchildren participate in sports and other activities.
Robert is survived by three children Robert J. (Carla) Wegrzyn, Jr. , Mary (Ken) Gonyea both of Wheatfield, NY and Lisa (Mark) Baehre of Clarence, NY; eight grandchildren Meghan, Ali, Erin, Olivia, Michael, Delaney, Lexi and Robert; one sister Jean (Harvey) Wegrzyn; one brother-in-law Daniel Bauman and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister Judith Janik and one brother Stanley (Dorothy) Wegrzyn.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, May 9th at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent DePaul at St. Leo’s Church, 2748 Military Road with Rev. Jeff Nowak officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Memorial donations may be made to the Northgate Health Care Facility Activities Department or Niagara Hospice.
