- Walter R. Hyla, 90, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at his son’s residence under hospice care in California. Born in Nanticoke, PA, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary (Lotnik) Hyla; and the beloved husband of the late Frances (Fitt) Hyla.
Walter moved to Niagara Falls in 1951 and earned his Associate’s degree in Mechanical Technology from Erie County Community College. On April 22, 1953. He enlisted in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1955.
Walter was employed by the Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant for over 27 years as an Instrument Technician. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Church, as well as their senior group. Walter was also a longtime member of the American Legion Portage Post 1465 and several local pinochle clubs throughout Lewiston, NY and N. Tonawanda, NY.
Mr. Hyla is survived by his son Robert (Rebecca) Hyla; two grandchildren, Robert Hyla Jr. and Lauren Hyla; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife France, his daughter Lynn Marie, three brothers, Henry, Chester and Joseph Hyla, and his five sisters, Lottie Soldon, Jean Langley, Stella Ziolkowski, Loretta Labus and Sophie Ciszek.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 6 from 3 – 7 PM at M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. Walter’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 7 at 10:00 AM in Divine Mercy Parish, 2437 Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14303. Military honors and interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery Lewiston, NY.
