- Shirley Ulrich Miller, age 95, formerly of Lewiston, died Monday July 24, 2017 in the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar, NY, after a long illness.
Shirley was born October 20, 1921 in Niagara Falls, NY. She was a graduate of Lafayette High School in Buffalo where she also attended business school. Shirley was a partner with her father in their drugstore, Ulrich's on Third Street in the Falls. As an artist, she later took on a career in commercial art doing signs and newspaper advertisements. On October 8, 1948 she married Budd Glenn Miller. She left work to raise a family with Budd and in 1967 they brought their family to Lewiston where her family had lived since the early 1800's.
Shirley was always the one in charge at her house knowing not just how to take care of things inside but outside as well. She was as handy with a screwdriver and hammer as she was with a computer keeping track of her finances and family with her notebook or iPad. In her youth, she loved skiing and horseback riding. In her later years, she and Budd took to vegetable gardening in a big way growing more than they or their neighbors could eat. Once with seeds provided by her brother-in-law, she and Budd grew a pumpkin weighing over 300 lbs.
She was one of two children born to the late William and Nellie (Robinson) Ulrich. Her brother Eugene Ulrich passed away in 2008. She was the beloved wife of her husband Budd who predeceased her in 2002 for over fifty years. She is survived by her sons, Robert G. (Jo-Ann) Miller of Delmar, NY and David D. (late Zoe) Miller of Killeen, TX; her grandchildren, Robert Kopenski, Emilie, Benjamin, Jane, and Tanya Miller; her great grandchildren, Ethan A. Miller, Giovanni KeAndre Wright, and Grace Bond. She was also predeceased by a grandson, David Miller, Jr.
Funeral Services will be held at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Saturday, July 29, at 11:00 am with the Rev. Charles Lamb officiating. There will be no prior visitation. Burial will follow in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewiston Historical Association, PO Box 43, Lewiston, NY 14092.
