- 104, a lifelong resident of the Town of Wheatfield, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 25, 2017, in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, NY. He was born on August 20, 1913 the son of the late Albert and Elsie [Schultz] Moje.
Elmer graduated from North Tonawanda High School in 1931. He was a Master Sergeant with the US Army in the European Theater, during World War II. Elmer was a general foreman with National Grinding Wheel in North Tonawanda for over 38 years, before retiring in 1976. He became a fixture at the North Tonawanda Farmers Market with his granddaughter Carly, where he was affectionately known as the "Honey Man" and later as the "Garlic Man".
Elmer was a dedicated member of the Shawnee Fire Company for the past 65 years, serving as financial secretary and on many of company's committees and boards over the years. He was a member of the Niagara County Fireman's Association, the Western New York Fireman's Volunteer Association, the New York State Fireman's Association and the Tonawanda American Legion Post 264. He also served on the Town of Wheatfield planning board. Elmer was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and a member of the Bobcats.
He was the husband of the late Ester L. [Paschka] Moje, who passed away in January of 1994.
Elmer is survived by a daughter Beverly (John) Freiert, a son Robert (Sandy) Moje, seven grandchildren Carly (Mackenzie) Fabiny, Richard (fiancé' Brittnee) Freiert, Eric Moje, Nicole Thomas, Jinnette Horan-Moje, Tim Walsh, Stanley Wesolowski, a niece Jeanne (Paul) Greasley and his dear friend Marilyn Moritz, also several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late David Moje and brother of the late Donald Moje.
His family will be present on Wednesday and Thursday from 1-3 & 6-8 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Road, SANBORN, NY. The Shawnee Fire Company will hold services on Thursday at 7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Paul's United Church of Christ-Shawnee, 3921 Mapleton Road, North Tonawanda, NY, with the Rev. Ronald Lord officiating.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made in his name to St. Paul's UCC Shawnee, the Shawnee Fire Co. or to Niagara Hospice.
Interment with military honors in Wheatfield Cemetery, Town of Wheatfield, NY.
