Dolores E. Fretthold (nee Pollard), age 93, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at home surrounded by family. Dolores was born in Detroit, Michigan to Louis and Louise Pollard. Loving wife of the late Carl E. Fretthold. Mother of Carl (Jean) Fretthold, James (Kim Fecher) Fretthold, Ann (Stephen) Ormsby, and Susan (Kenneth) Roberts. Cherished grandmother to Lisa (Erik), Michael (Mandy), Jenna (Corey), Daniel (Mary), Kelly, Christopher (Lorena), Laura (David), Erin (Jonathan), Sara, and Patrick. Great grandmother of Dylan, Morgan, Macie, Maddie, and Andrew.
She attended Zion Lutheran Elementary School and was in the first graduating class of Detroit Lutheran High School. She then attended Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois for her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After completing her first year of studies in River Forest, Dolores served for one year as a supply teacher at St. Mark Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. She was met at the Buffalo Train Station by the Pastor's son, Carl E. Fretthold, who became her husband in June of 1953. She later taught special education at Tonawanda High School after completing her master’s degree from Buffalo State University. She highly valued Christian education and the pursuit of higher learning. She enthusiastically followed and supported the college and career choices of her children and grandchildren.
Dolores was always an avid reader, favoring suspenseful crime mysteries, and her library overflowed with her beloved book collection. She was happy to recommend and lend reading material to friends and family. She enjoyed music and the theater. She was also a talented artist, played the piano and organ, and wrote many a poem for special family occasions. She was an avid baseball fan and followed her Detroit Tigers for years, often attending games in Detroit or Cleveland. She also loved to attend the sports activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her later years, Dolores displayed her love of color and flowers as the master gardener at the funeral home and enjoyed the birds and wildlife that were attracted to her backyard. She was an active member of several local Lutheran Churches - Missouri Synod: St Mark's and St. Matthew of North Tonawanda, and most recently First Trinity, Town of Tonawanda. Dolores was a generous supporter of various local organizations, including Buffalo City Mission, the Salvation Army, and most recently, the local North Tonawanda Food Pantry.
Friends may call at Fretthold Funeral Home, Inc., 1241 Oliver Street, at the corner of Ward Road on Thursday at 3:00pm - 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00am at the funeral home. Interment at Saint Mark Lutheran Cemetery. Condolences may be shared at FrettholdFuneralHome.com.
