- On October 11, 2023 Ruth Helen Elizabeth (Ostrander) Dixson passed away peacefully after a brief illness. Born October, 12, 1928 in Niagara Falls, NY to Charles Otis and Elsie (Almost) Ostrander, Ruth was just shy of celebrating her 95th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband, Jay Barry Dixson. Ruth is survived by her sister Myrtle (Ostrander) Gilreath, numerous cousins, and many nieces and nephews, including those she considered her honorary family. Ruth had a lively personality and enjoyed sharing stories of her many travels.
Ruth worked for many years at Allie Brandt Lanes in Lockport as director of the youth bowling program. She also enjoyed working at Judi’s Lounge in Niagara Falls selling lottery tickets well into her eighties. Ruth was an accomplished bowler who won many amateur competitions and travelled often with her team. She bowled 300 on the TV program Bowling for Dollars for which she won a trip to London that she enjoyed with her husband Barry. After a lifetime of travel, at 82 and 84, on road trips across Canada and the U.S. and the American southwest with her nieces Janice and Frances Gilreath, Ruth was proud to complete her goal of visiting all the provinces of Canada and 49 of the 50 United States (excepting Alaska). She was talented at needle point, creating many landscapes and other scenes that graced the walls of her home and were gifted to friends and family. Ruth will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.
Visitation Thursday October 19, 2023 from 3-7 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Services and interment will be private at Arlington National Cemetery to be with her husband.
