- Mary Elaine Stecher, of the Cloisters in Warsaw NY (formerly from Niagara Falls) passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 7, 2024, in Wyoming County Community Hospital, Warsaw, at the age of 82. She was born on June 6, 1942, in Niagara Falls, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Marcin. She was raised in the hamlet of Bergholz, in the Town of Wheatfield, where her parents owned Marcin’s Motel on Niagara Falls Boulevard. She enjoyed time with her cousins who lived nearby. She earned her teaching degree from Niagara University, with her main area of interest being in mathematics. She married John Stecher, also from Niagara Falls, on June 26, 1965. After marrying, they moved to Tonawanda, where she worked as a math teacher. They moved to California for a short time, but then returned home to LaSalle, and she continued to teach math before becoming a loving mother to her three children Joe, Kathleen and Gregory. Throughout her life, Mary was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and friend who loved nothing more than to see people smile. She was a member of Prince of Peace parish, and later attended St. Christopher’s RC Church, where she participated in multiple church activities, including the church choir and solace chorale. She always enjoyed singing music of all types and encouraged a love of music in her children. She loved to laugh and to spend time outside with her children, including hiking in the Niagara gorge, camping in the summer, helping with her daughter’s Girl Scout troop on trips, and spending quality time with her family and friends. Mary was a great cook, and made sure all of her children could cook as well. She suffered a stroke in 2004, but was still able to be a wonderful grandmother. Mary and John moved to Warsaw, NY in 2009, after health complications for both made the move to be closer to Kathleen necessary. There she continued to light up the room with her smile and laughter. Mary enjoyed looking at gardens, being outside, and going for car rides to see the farmer’s fields and rolling hills in the area. She loved good food, but especially an ice cream cone in the summer. Mary was predeceased by her husband John, her parents, and brother William (Bill) Marcin of California. Surviving are her children Fredrick Joseph (Joe) Stecher (Brenda) of North Carolina, Kathleen Bliss (Marc) of Freedom NY, and Gregory Stecher (Ruta) of Florida, grandchildren, Matthew and Anna Bliss, David and Emily Stecher, and Ieva Ziziunaite, sister Joanne Mills of Morristown NJ, her best friend Nancy Shaw, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield, on Thursday (November 14) from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday (November 15) at 11:30 a.m. in St. Christopher Catholic Church, 2660 Niagara Falls Boulevard, Tonawanda, NY 14150. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Town of Lewiston, NY.
