Janis Marie Maybach of Appleton, NY passed away on Thursday December
26, 2024. She was born on March 7, 1945 and was the youngest child of the late
Marie and Maurice Harrod. Her siblings include her bothers Richard (Ginny) Harrod
and the late Jimmie (Connie) Harrod.
She was a long tenured and distinguished employee of the Barker Central
School District where she last served as the Executive Secretary to the District
Superintendent prior to her retirement. Janis was also a member of the Faith United
Methodist Church in Barker and was active in the choir and the Sunday teaching
staff.
In the community, she was an advocate for learning and service and believed
that education was a life-long adventure with a goal to enjoy the trip. She was a
graduate of Barker Central School in 1963 and pursued a post-secondary education
through Niagara Community College and the Empire State University. Over the
years she held leadership positions in many community organizations serving Barker,
Newfane, and Niagara-Orleans counties.
She was an accomplished musician and author and enjoyed playing the
saxophone in the community band, engaging with her book club, and writing short-
stories for which she won awards in NYS competitions. Her other hobbies included
gardening and preserving the fruits and vegetables that she harvested. In her
retirement, she fulfilled a goal of becoming a small business owner and opened a
road-side shop called the “The Berry Basket”, selling natural and organic foods and
specialty gifts.
She is survived by her husband, Gerard Maybach, and by her three sons,
Gerry (Donna) Maybach, Gregg (Debbie) Maybach, and Jason (Stacy) Maybach.
Her greatest joy came from celebrating the accomplishments of her five
grandchildren (Justin, Loren, Joshua, Gavin, and Kirsten).
A celebration of her life will be held at a future date to allow family and friends
to travel and gather together. Her burial will be at the Town of Somerset cemetery.
