Patricia McCarthy Obituary
Patricia (McInerney) McCarthy passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2025. She was born to Bernard and Mary [Klimitz] McInerney in Niagara Falls, NY on April 14, 1928.
She attended school in Niagara Falls and Batavia, New York and in Moundsville, West Virginia graduating from high school in Moundsville in 1945. After a brief career as a telephone operator, she married John P. “Brub” McCarthy on February 4,1950 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Niagara Falls, NY.
She and Brub welcomed ten children over the course of the next 17 (seventeen) years. Their house on Michigan Avenue was always full to the rafters. In addition to their children, Pat often welcomed both extended family members and friends of her children to stay, providing a sanctuary for as long as needed. She was an expert on stretching a budget to feed a crowd. Her brownies, apple squares and scones were legendary, and she delighted in whipping up a birthday cake from scratch as long as it was carrot cake because, according to Pat, carrot cake is everyone's favorite.
Everyone who knew Pat, knew her faith was the centerpiece of her life. Her children will always remember the May altars in the dining room, the family rosaries after dinner in May and October, the long walks to Monday night novenas at Our Lady of Lebanon Church and the celebrations as each of her children made their sacraments. Paintings of the Sacred Heart, the Blessed Mother and the Last Supper graced the walls of her home, a replica of the Pieta greeted visitors in the front hall and there was a crucifix in nearly every room of the house. Open a drawer and one was sure to find a rosary.
It is no wonder then that Pat became a Eucharistic Minister and when her children were a little older, she went to work as the Coordinator of Religious Education at Sacred Heart parish recruiting teachers for religious education classes at Sacred Heart for many years earning the Catechetical Leadership Award for "outstanding servant leadership” in the spring of 2007. When Sacred Heart Parish closed, Pat continued her work as Director of Religious Education at St. Raphael's. She especially rejoiced in teaching classes for RCIA.
Another thing that Pat thoroughly enjoyed was singing. She sang in the choir at Sacred Heart for many years and joyfully joined the choir at St. Raphael’s. Her clear soprano would ring out with the responses at masses where the choir was not present. Her voice was an instrument to praise God and to comfort her children who surely all remember her nightly renditions of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "An Irish Lullaby". On January 30, Pat left us to find her place in the heavenly choir. Hers was a life well-lived and one undoubtedly meant to be remembered for her unyielding faith, her patience, strength and grace. May she now rest in God's comfort and peace.
Pat was predeceased by her parents, her husband, John P. McCarthy, her sisters, Frances Melfi and Nora Siusinger and her son, Timothy G. McCarthy.
She is survived by her sisters, Jean McInerney and Catherine Iskander, her brother, Edward McInerney, her children Nora (late Wendell) Scherer, Joseph (Bell) McCarthy, Mary (Chris) Critelli, Sean (Joyce) McCarthy, Edward (Genia) McCarthy, Patricia Burtch, Thomas (TeeGee) McCarthy, Margaret (John) Jenkins, and Michele (Mark) Whitley. She is also survived by Timothy's widow, Lisa, 41 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren, one great, great, grandchild and an abundance of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors at the Rhoney Funeral Home, 1124 Ontario Avenue, Niagara Falls from 3-7:00 PM on Tuesday February 4. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Wednesday, February 5 at St. Raphael’ s Roman Catholic Church, 3840 Macklem Avenue, Niagara Falls.
The family wishes to to thank the staff at Schoellkopf Health Center for their kind and compassionate care.
