Sister Nicholas Macoretta, O.S.F. (Letizia Patricia)

Sister Nicholas Macoretta died Sunday, October 26 at the Stella Niagara Health Center, Stella Niagara, NY. She was born in Thorold, Ontario, on March 17, 1930, Sr. Nicholas was the daughter of Nicola Macoretta and Carmela (Saltarelli) and sister to the late Joseph Macoretta (Anna).
She was raised in the North End of Niagara Falls, NY, Leta was a proud graduate of the Seminary of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Stella Niagara. After her graduation, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara in 1949 and was professed in 1952 taking the name of her father.
A life-long educator, S. Nicholas received her B.S. Ed from the former Rosary Hill College, Amherst, NY in 1963 and her M.S. Ed. from Niagara University, Lewiston, NY, in 1977.
Sister “Nick,” as she is lovingly referred to, had a nearly 50-year career as teacher, counselor, coach, and principal at schools in New Jersey, South Carolina, and Western New York. She retired in 2001 after 25 years as principal of Stella Niagara Education Park. She was truly a “kids’ principal” and was always there to listen, guide and direct students on the path of “doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.”
Family was an important part of Sister Nicholas’s life. She often recounted the early days of her life in Thorold, her Uncle Frank Macoretta, Aunt Jenny, and the closeness to her cousins Jerry and Alfred Macoretta and Sister Mary Macoretta, CSJ. One of her fondest memories was working alongside her dad at Macoretta’s Delicatessen at Cleveland and 13th St. in Niagara Falls. In later years, she enjoyed Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations with Joe and Anna’s eight children, their spouses and her grandnieces and nephews.
Sister Nicholas will be missed as a member of the Stella Niagara community and by the sisters and staff in the Health Center. Her customary closing to any letter or phone call, as all those who knew her, worked for and with her, and shared community and friendship can attest, was and is “God bless!”
In addition to her sister-in-law, Anna Macoretta, S. Nicholas is survived by her nieces and nephew: Anne Marie Beach (late Gregory Beach), Rose Anne Macoretta (David Wahl), Paulette Krueger (Michael), Nicholas Macoretta, Maria Valeri, Karmell Macoretta (Michael Murphy), JoAnna Daeschner (Michael) and Angela Ciraolo (Anthony).
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 31 from 4-7 pm at Stella Niagara in the Sisters chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Stella Niagara on Saturday, November 1 at 10:00 am.
Burial will be Monday, November 3rd at Stella Niagara.
