UBURN - Robert J. McMahon, 89, of Auburn, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017 at Auburn Community Hospital. Robert was born on Dec. 22, 1927 to the late Francis and Ann Erwin McMahon and was raised in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Robert served in the U.S. Army as a photographer during World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Army he went on to higher education at The University of Buffalo and Harvard Business School. Robert worked for Carborundum as a manufacturing manager in Niagara Falls, where he met his bride-to-be, Nancy Butts. He married Nancy on Dec. 11, 1965 and just this past year they celebrated their 51st anniversary. They later moved to Auburn, where he worked at General Products as general manager. Under the Wickes Manufacturing Company, as the Vice President and general manager, he commissioned the building of the Auburn plant of Wickes which is now known as TRW.
Robert was an avid reader, sailor, and was a member of the Owasco Country Club and Auburn Golf and Country Club, where he played in the old timer's league. He also enjoyed giving of his time and talent being on the Merry Go Round Theatre Board of Directors, Vice Chair on the Chamber of Commerce and Auburn Community Hospital Boards. Robert loved spending time with his family and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, Robert is survived by his daughter, Patricia Hartwell and her husband, Christopher, of Auburn; son, Robert McMahon and his wife, Christine, of Memphis, N.Y.; two brothers, Francis T. McMahon, of Cicero, and James McMahon and his wife, Nancy, of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; sister, Mary Jane Ross, of Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Bradley, Natalie, and Tiffani McMahon, and Mary Catherine Hartwell; two step-grandchildren, Emily and Jennifer Hartwell; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his sister, Eileen McMahon.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 at the Brew Funeral Home, 48 South St., Auburn. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017 in Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Road, Auburn, NY 13021. A committal service will follow in St. Joseph's Mausoleum.
