- Visitation for Virgil J. Guimond, 79, of Manteno, will be from 2-7 p.m. today, with a wake service at 2 p.m.,
at the Clancy- Gernon Funeral Home, Manteno.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Manteno, by the Rev. Mark Fracaro.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Manteno.
Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Association St. Joseph Church, where he was a member for more than 40 years.
Mr. Guimond died suddenly Thursday (Nov. 27, 1997) at St. Mary's Hospital emergency room.
He was born July 30, 1918 in Manteno, the son of Alfred and Cordelia Mathew Guimond.
Surviving are his wife, the former Catherine J. Boyd, whom he married Aug. 10, 1942 in Tampa, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodger and Candace Guimond of Ione, Cal. and Mark and Cathy Guimond of Manteno; two daughters, Virginia Guimond and Martha Guimond, both of Dallas, Texas; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Rita Blanchette of Bourbonnais, Aldine and Gordon Brown of Franklin Park and Luella Rockway of Kankakee; and four grandchildren.
Deceased are three sisters, Inez, Helen and Isabelle.
Mr. Guimond was resident engineer for the new phase construction of the Waste Treatment facility in Manteno. He had worked in construction all of his life. He had farmed in the Manteno area.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, served as a French interpreter and helped develop the radar used by air controllers today. He was a member of the Manteno American Legion, VFW and Manteno Apostles Table.
A graduate of Manteno High Schoo, he held the record for the 220 yard dash.
Mr. Guimond was on the County Planning Commission; chariman of the Manteno Planning Committee for more than 20 years; member of the Rock Creek Draining District Board; helped with Matneno Youth Soccer; former member of the Manteno Village Board; member and former president of the Chamber of Commerce; former president of the Manteno P.T.A. He wrote and published the History of Manteno Township and was on the Illinois Diversatech Steering Committee.
