NIAGARA FALLS — Joseph Tavano, 80, of Niagara Falls, NY, died on Monday, January 10, 2011 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY, following a brief illness. Born on April 23, 1930 in Welland, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Anthony and Helen (Wilkes) Tavano.
Mr. Tavano attended schools in Canada. Joseph served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, stationed in Japan, from October 22, 1948 until his honorable discharge on June 17, 1952. While serving, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Tavano worked for the New York Telephone Company, until his retirement in 1985. For many years, Joseph was the owner and operator of the Cataract Liquor Store on Ontario Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. On July 31, 1986 he married Betty Jane (nee Chambers) Reed Tavano. She predeceased him on October 10, 2009. Mr. Tavano was a longtime member of the LaSalle Yacht Club, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Elks Lodge #346 in the Town of Niagara, NY.
Mr. Tavano is survived by one daughter, Jennifer (Christopher) Molak of Lewiston, NY; two grandchildren, Katelyn and Jessie Molak, both of Lewiston, NY; his very good friend, Tom and his constant companion, Molly. Joseph is also survived by two step-children, Adrienne (William) Doepp of Tonawanda, NY and Douglas (Mary Lou) Reed of Columbus, OH; and four step-grandchildren, William and Amy Doepp, both of Tonawanda, NY and Mark and Steven Reed, both of Columbus, OH. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Sam Tavano.
There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 15th at 11:00 AM the OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY (297-9007). Mr. Tavano graciously donated his body to the University of Buffalo's Anatomical Gift Program. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094 or to the National MS Society, PO Box 4527, New York, NY 10163.
