- Carmela Frances "Mela" Mathew, 88, of Remington, died at 3:55 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at Whispering Pines Rehabilitation Center in Monticello.
She was born Nov. 14, 1922, in Lynbrook, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late Michael and Julia Spina DeLisa. She graduated from Lynbrook High School and received special training from Grumman's Aircraft School.
She married Leonard E. Mathew on Nov. 25, 1945, and he died Oct. 25, 2007.
She and her husband lived and farmed in Wolcott most of their lives until moving to Remington in 1987.
Mrs. Mathew was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, past member of Parish Council and taught CCD for more than 30 years. She also was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 280, past director of the Wolcott Community Library and founding board member of the Wolcott Historical Society.
Mrs. Mathew worked for Grumman's Aircraft Corp. during World War II and Doubleday Publishing.
She was an avid bridge player and reader. She enjoyed playing golf and was a supporter of Tri-County athletics. She also was an active volunteer for the Sacred Heart Sewing Group and Remington Food Pantry.
Surviving are five daughters, Mary Ann Sy (husband: Denny) of Homer, Ill., Ellen Atkinson (husband: Don) of Remington, Connie Chamberlain (husband: Bill) of Wolcott, Joyce Tiefiel (husband: Joe) of Clay City, Annette Bahler (husband: Ed) of Lafayette; two sons, David Mathew (wife: Nancy) of Clay City and Lee Mathew (wife: Doris) of South Bend; and three sisters, Ida Phillips, Julia Esposito and Josephine Mathew (husband: Marvin).
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
