  Emigrated to Tonawanda, New York with his mother, brother Will, and sisters Rose and Etta in 1872. His father, Jesse, had emigrated earlier. Jesse moved to Tonawanda after being caught in the Great Chicago Fire. He met Martha Rosina McGahey at the Niagara Power Station, where they both worked.
