- Evelyn Pauline (Bernahl) Vitkus was welcomed home to the Church Triumphant on March 10, 2017. She was the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Haseley) Bernahl of Altamont, IL. Her brother Franklin and sister, Hilma (Schroeder) preceded her as well as her son Charles and daughter Diane Sue. Her husband Peter and son Daniel continue to live in Carmel, Indiana. Son-in-law, Rev. Dennis Meyer, granddaughter Rebecca (Robert) McCuaig and great-granddaughter Hannah live in La Porte, Indiana. Grandson Aaron (Cassie) Meyer live in Jasper, Indiana. Evelyn (Nana) was a woman of faith and strength. She described herself as “little but mighty". She and Peter were active in church. Evelyn regularly participated in women’s groups, Bible Studies, and Evangelism programs in all the various communities they lived. Most recently, Evelyn, Peter, and Daniel have been active members of Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Carmel, Indiana. Evelyn loved her family and their friends. She was an amazing cook and homemaker. Countless recipes have become favorites for her loved ones. There was always a warm welcome and a place at their table. Evelyn was an avid gardener. She loved God’s creation and whether it was the vegetable garden or flower garden, she was at home with garden gloves and a trowel to work the soil. The farm and the family from Illinois were a beloved part of her life and a favorite vacation spot for trips to connect with her roots. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 102 G Street, La Porte, Indiana on April 9, 2017 at 2:30 PM (CST). Arrangements have been made through Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Her son-in-law, Pastor Dennis Meyer, will preside at the service.
