Longtime legislator; active in civic groups
SANBORN - Marvin W. Wendt, 73, of Shenk Road, a Niagara County legislator from 1978 to 1991, died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 1996) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston.
He was born on Nov. 23, 1922, in Cambria, the son of William and Grace Wendt. On June 17, 1944, he married the former Ruth O. Belling in St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Marvin W. Wendt North Tonawanda.
Born in Cambria, he was self-employed as a well driller and excavator from 1944 to 1989.
From 1978 to 1991, Mr. Wendt served as a Niagara County legislator.
He was a member of the Western New York and the New York State Volunteer Firemen's Association, and was active in civic affairs. He was a charter member of the Sanborn Lions Club. He was very active with the Republican party and was a past Republican committeeman.
He served as past president of the Sanborn Fire Company, where he also was a past assistant fire chief, past president of the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's Association, past treasurer of both St. Martin's Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda and St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Walmore Road, where he was a member.
He was an avid fan, as well as a collector, of old steam engines, and was active in the Western New York Gas and Steam Association, where he served as director.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Lance Wendt of Sanborn; three daughters, Kathleen Goss, Janelle Kroening and Lynette Sessman, all of Sanborn; six brothers, Donald Wendt, Bertrum Wendt, Glenn Wendt, William Wendt Jr., Kenneth Wendt and Forest Wendt, all of Sanborn; a 1 sister, Gracellyn Bilek of Sanborn; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Friday at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, Bergholz, where the Sanborn Fire Company and the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's Association will hold services at 8:45 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Walmore Road, Wheatfield. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Marvin W. Wendt, a self-employed well driller and excavator and a Niagara County legislator for 13 years, died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 1996) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston.
Wendt, 73, of Shenk Road was born in the Town of Cambria and had been a lifelong resident of Sanborn.
He had owned and operated a business as a well driller and excavator from 1944 to 1989.
Wendt was a member of the Niagara County Legislature from 1978 to 1991 and was active with the Republican Party, serving as Republican committeeman.
He was also active in civic affairs and was a charter member of the Sanborn Lions Club.
Wendt had also been active in the Sanborn Volunteer Fire Company, having served as their past president and past assistant fire chief. He was also the past president of the Niagara County Volunteer Fireman's Association.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth O. Belling, whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage with on June 17.
He is also survived by a son, Lance; three daughters, Kathleen Goss, Janelle Kroening and Lynette Sessman; six brothers, Donald, Bertram, Glenn, William Jr., Kenneth and Forest; a sister, Gracellyn Bilek; and 11 grandchildren.
A joint memorial service will be offered by the Sanborn Fire Company and the Niagara County Volunteer Fireman's Association at 8:45 P.M. Friday in DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, Bergholz.
Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. Saturday in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 6168 Walmore Road, Wheatfield. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.
