James F. Lorenze, 77, a retired electrician, former Cambria town constable and a founding member of Tri-Community Ambulance Service, died Wednesday (June 19, 2002) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a brief illness.
He was born in Fenlon Falls, Ont., and came to Niagara Falls as a child, attending local schools. He later attended Erie Community College.
Lorenze served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Second Ranger Battalion and received three Purple Heart awards.
Returning from the service, he worked for Ferguson Electric and Emerson Day during the construction of the Niagara Power Project, Lewiston. He later worked as the electrical maintenance supervisor at Bell Aerospace, Wheatfield, for many years before retiring in 1989.
Lorenze worked for the last four years as the park ranger at Four Mile Creek State Park, Youngstown.
A longtime resident of Cambria, he served as a town constable for many years. He also acted as a Red Cross instructor for Tri-Community Ambulance.
Lorenze also was a member of Sanborn Post 969, American Legion, the World War II Ranger Battalion Association, and was a former member of the Niagara-Wheatfield School Board, serving from 1965 to 1974. He served as president of that board for three years.
He was also an exempt member of the Pekin Fire County, a member of the National Rifle Association and the State Crossbow Association, and was a special deputy of the Niagara County Sheriff's Department.
His first wife, the former Mary Jane Foss, died in 1971, and his second wife, the former Lois N. Scudamore, died in 1997.
Survivors include four sons, James R. of Mobile, Ala., Douglas M. of Youngstown, Scott W. Scudamore of Dumfries, Va., and Marc A. Scudamore of Albuquerque, NM; two daughters, Robin Vertino of Grand Island and Laurie A. Bartlett of Sanborn; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday in Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Road. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston.
