Evelyn Henrietta Gade, 93, of Springfield, IL, died Sunday April 30, 2006 at the Heritage Manor. She was born May 24, 1912 in Martinsville, NY, the daughter of Fred and Magdalena Hoffmeister Jagow. She married Hugo Gade in Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Bergholz, NY June 28,1931. He preceded her in death in 1980
She taught kindergarten in Lutheran schools in LaPorte, IN and Baltimore, MD and later became a division manager for World Book Company in the Baltimore area. She was known for her warmth and hospitality and frequently shared bounty from her beautiful garden. She adapted cheerfully to changes in her life with moves to Pittsburgh, PA, LaPorte, IN and Baltimore, MD where her husband taught in Lutheran schools. They moved to Bel Air, MD in retirement and were active at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and fulfilled a dream of an organic garden. She particularly enjoyed growing strawberries and making jam to share with her many friends. Evelyn moved to Springfield, IL to be near her eldest daughter in 1996 and joined in fellowship at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was active in the quilting group and senior Bible class.
Surviving are her 2 daughters, Elaine (husband Dr. Alan) Birtch of Springfield, IL and Barbara (husband Edward) Thompson, of Edinburg, TX; her 2 sons Dr. Daniel (wife Mary) Gade of Burlington VT, and David Gade of Gaithersburg, MD; 8 grandchildren, Grant (wife Susan) Eric (wife Joanne) and mark (wife Jonell) Birtch, Jane (husband Oleg) Birtch Vatchev, Jay Alexander (wife Olga), Bill (wife Shari) and Michael (wife Jennie) Thompson, and Christopher (wife Tere) Gade; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Marilyn (husband Bob) Winter of N, Tonawanda, Erie County, NY, Betty Williams of Lockport, Niagara County, NY a brother Victor (wife Betty) Jagow, of Thurmond MD; 3 sisters-in-law, Hilda Wurl, Norma Stolzenburg and Shirley Jagow and several nieces and nephews.
