Had lifelong love affair with music
LOCKPORT - Adelia F. (Ferchen) Eggert, whose involvement with music spanned most of the century, died Friday (July 13, 1990) at the Briody Nursing Home. Mrs. Eggert, 92, was a former resident of the Ferchen Homestead, Cayuga Street, Bergholz.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1897, the daughter of Christian and Auguste Ferchen.
She began music lessons as a 4 year-old and began teaching music at 16. She played the piano for a four piece family orchestra when she was 16, with her sister as the soloist. She and her sister sang duets. She was a member of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church quartet and also played at silent movies at the Shredded Wheat County, where she worked from 1918 to 1929 packing biscuits.
Mrs. Eggert was also music chairman for the Niagara County American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Auxiliary for 38 years at Post 1451 on Ward Road. She was a Niagara Gazette correspondent for 10 years and a member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church for 74 years, where she was a member of the church's Ladies Aid Society, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Lutheran League. She was also a member of the Niagara County Salon 25 of 8 and 40, Wheatfield Senior Citizens, Sanborn Senior Citizens and the First Volunteer Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary of Bergholz.
She organized the "Happy Harmoniers" orchestra in 1953, which entertained locally for 25 years. She also took pride. in the fact that she was the first woman in Wheatfield to serve as a Niagara County jurist.
She was the widow of Edward Eggert, who died in 1950 and sister of the late Eric Ferchen and Hugo Ferchen and the late Nora Williams. Mrs. Eggert is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Hilts of Sanborn; one son, Noel Eggert of Sanborn; and nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, Bergholz.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Bergholz Fire Co. will hold memorial services at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Bergholz with the Rev, Philip Sallaeh officiating. Burial will be in Holy Ghost Lutheran Cemetery; Contributions to Holy Ghost Lutheran Church are acceptable as tribute.
