- James A. Ferchen
One of Niagara FallsÂ’ leading businessmen, James A. Ferchen, passed away in Arizona this last week. He was 91. After building the Francis Optical Co. into a very successful business, he turned the business over to his son, Richard Ferchen and went to Florida. After a few years in Florida, where he worked part time in the Sears Optical Department, he retired and later moved to Arizona to be near his daughter, Peggy Smith. During the second World War, Mr. Ferchen was an instructor in the Air Cadets in Niagara University. When he married Myrtle Emms, they started square dancing and round dancing. They became very well known for their beautiful dancing in the Western New York area and also in Florida when they moved there. In addition to his wife of 66 years, Mr. Ferchen is survived by two sons, Timothy and Richard; two daughters, Denise Cohen and Peggy Smith; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held in the Vistoso Community Church in Sun City, AZ on Monday, October 8, 2007.
