Mrs. Robert Thiele of Paynes avenue
narrowly escaped drowning in the Tonawanda
Creek at Martinsville shortly
before noon today. She was rescued
with great difficulty by Casper Dauman
of Martinsville.
Mrs. Thiele went to Martinsville by
trolley this morning and attempted to
walk across the creek to the home of
her father, Charles Belling, on the opposite
side of the stream. She had
reached the middle of the creek when
the ice broke and she was precipitated
into the water.
Several times Mrs. Thiele attempted
to climb upon the ice, 'but each
time the ice broke and she fell back into
the water. Finally almost overcome
from her efforts and immersions the
woman cried for help. Dauman was the
first to arrive on the scene. He approached
within a few yards of the woman
and then extended a pole to her,
Mrs. Thiele clung to the pole and was
pulled onto solid ice. She was assisted
to the home of Mrs. J. Grosskupf of
Martinsville and provided with dry clothing
and stimulants.
Mrs. Thiele is a bride of a few days.
Her husband is employed at the Knapp-
Cramer Hardware Company's store in
