Helen L. Hassan, 81, a homemaker who worked in her family's grocery store for many years, died Thursday (March 13, 2003) in her Grand Island home after a long illness.
Born Helen Grobengieser in Niagara Falls, she worked in the family grocery store for many years after graduating from Niagara Falls High School in 1940 with top honors. Grobengieser & Sons, the family store, was located on 18th Street and South Avenue in Niagara Falls for 65 years.
A homemaker for most of her life, she was a lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, gardening and trips to the family cabin in Canisteo.
Her husband, Daniel, died in 1979.
She is survived by three sons, Robert of Crossville, TN., James of Wolcott and Mark of Grand Island; a brother, Edward Grobengieser of Niagara Falls; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held today in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Niagara Falls.
