- Philip A. Mathew, 97, of Wolcott, died on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at White Oaks Health Campus of Monticello. Phil was born on March 13, 1924 in Wolcott to the late Adeline Bergeron and Arthur Mathew. He was a 1942 graduate of Wolcott High School.
Phil was the fourth oldest of eleven siblings. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his service, Phil farmed and had a dairy operation for many years. After farming, he owned a tavern in Remington named Phil and Connie's for 10 years. Phil also worked at Hazelton County Club as a bar attendant and dining room assistant for 10 years.
After retirement, he worked part-time which gave him the opportunity to enjoy his activities of fishing, traveling, gardening, mowing his lawn, and spending time with his friends. One of his favorite things to do was dancing at the VFW with his companion Connie Jeffries and listening to great bands.
Surviving are his children, Mike Mathew of Kingman, IN, John (Tina) Mathew of Logansport, IN, Gina (John) Culver of Chalmers, IN, Paul (Mary Ellen) Mathew of Remington, and Beth (Lonnie) Baker of Lafayette, IN. Three sisters, Alice Shillis of Nashville, TN, Mabel Hendryx of Brookston, and Grace (Robert "Red") Oiler of Monticello. Phil was also blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are brothers, Louie, Bernie, Izzy, Orville, Robert, and Vernon. Sister, Martha and his best friend and companion, Connie Jeffries.
