Lionel L. " Les " Read, 88, of Sanborn, NY, died peacefully Friday, July 24, 2009, at home with his loving family while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Les was born in Sanborn, NY, on April 19, 1921, the son of Viola (Sanborn) and Lionel J. Read, where he attended local schools. e served in the United States Army Air Force, during World War II, serving in Central Burma, India Burma, and was awarded the American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and the WW II Victory Medal. Les had owned and operated several business's in Sanborn including a Gas Station, Trenching business and Pyrofax Gas propane business. He was also a operating engineer for over 30 years, and worked through the IUOE # 463. He was very active in the Sanborn Community he cared so much about including, a member of the Sanborn Fire Co. for over 60 years, Sanborn American Legion, for over 50 years, a Charter Member of the Sanborn Lion's Club, one of the founding members of the Sanborn Area Historical Society, where he had served as a board member. He was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church. He enjoyed many years of retirement traveling, enjoying family, and being involved in the historical events including display of his antique equipment. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, the former Elena B. Strasburg, who died May 24, 2003; and a brother, William Clinton Read who died at the age of 17. Surviving are two sons, William (Ruth) Read, and Ronald L. Read, both of Sanborn, NY; two granddaughters, Andrea (Read) Hughes, of Sanborn and Kimberly (Read) Bolos, of Dallas, TX; three great-grandchildren, Jared Hughes, Michael Hughes, and Elena Bolos; a sister, Clara Mae (Pete) Martin of Newfane, NY; and several nieces and nephews. The family will be present Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM, at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, SANBORN, 5893 Hoover Road, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM, with the Rev. Victor Meteiver, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Mount View Cemetery Town of Cambria, NY. Should friends desire memorials in Les's memory memorials may be made to the Sanborn Area Historical Society, PO Box 172, Sanborn, NY 14132-0172 or Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094. The Sanborn Fire Company will conduct a memorial service Monday at 7:30 PM, and the American Legion Post # 969, will conduct services at 8 PM at the funeral home.
