WHEATFIELD - Donald G. Mante, who headed the Town of Wheatfield Highway Department for 22 years, died last Tuesday while on a hunting trip in Machais. He was 68.
Mr. Mante was a lifelong resident of the town and worked for the Highway Department for 38 years before retiring as its elected superintendent in 1999.
He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also was a devoted Cleveland Browns football fan.
Mr. Mante was a member of the Wheatfield Democratic Club, the Niagara County Highway
Superintendents Association and the Wheatfield Seniors Club.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, the former Arlene R. Krull; a daughter, Lori Mettler of Sanborn; his mother, Mary of Wheatfield; a brother, Martin Jr. of Wheatfield; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Services were Sunday in Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member. Burial was in Holy Ghost Lutheran Cemetery.
