- Walter E. Toellner age 88, of the Town of Wheatfield, April 9, 2009 in Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.Walter was a WWII veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a survivor of the HMS Rohna which was sunk on Thanksgiving 1943 resulting in the largest loss ever of American life at sea. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1451, the V.F.W. and was a 69-year member of the Adams Fire Co. Walter was active in Wheatfield politics, serving as an Assessor for 8 years and serving on the Town of Wheatfield Planning Board. He had worked a crane operator for Schebell Ready Mix for 20 years and retired from the Niagara County Water Authority. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was the husband of the late Ruth E. Toellner who died in 2008. Beloved father of John (Donna) Toellner of Irwin, PA, William (Brenda) Toellner of Harrisburg, PA, James (Bernadine) Toellner of Grand Island and Joanne Walck of Wheatfield; grandfather of Jennifer, Bethany, Jonathan, Daniel, David, Benjamin, Brittany, Kristin, Nicholas and Ryan; great-grandfather of five great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home, Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd. in North Tonawanda on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM from St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 875 Eggert Dr., in North Tonawanda, the Rev. Dr. A. W. Moldenhauer will officiate.
