Helen C. Knox
Of Sanborn, NY, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, in the Beechwood Continuing Care, Getzville, NY. She was born March 5, 1926, on the family farm to Michael and Julia [Ivezic] Cindrich.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Helen had a wonderful sense of humor and capricious nature. She was tenacious and had a creative, competitive spirit that showed in her love of sports, particularly golf, and as a visual artist.
Along with her parents, she and the other siblings helped with the farm work. She often said she was doing “boy’s work”, especially during WW2 while her brothers were in the service. She loved to ride horses.
Helen attended LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls but dropped out to take a job at Carborundum in the Product Planning, Bonded Products and Grain Division. During this time, she played softball with the company team.
While raising her family, Helen volunteered for community activities and was a member of the American Legion, the Niagara Wheatfield High School Band Boosters and chaperoned for band events and trips. Helen also served as a substitute teacher at Niagara Wheatfield High School for many years.
A very gifted athlete, she was an active member of the Hyde Park Golf Club in Niagara Falls, where she competed in tournaments and repeatedly won the Club Championships in the 9 Hole category. She also won tournaments at Niagara Falls Country Club, Niagara Frontier Country Club and Lockport Country Club. She qualified for the nationals in a tournament in Cortland, NY. She represented New York State in the National Senior Games in St. Louis in 1987 and the Empire State Senior Games in 1998. Helen played golf until she was 89!
Helen returned to school as an adult learner and attended Niagara County Community College where she completed her GED and continued to study the visual arts and earned her Associate Degree in Science, Fine Arts. She pursued her passion for painting, showing her art at many art shows and festivals. She specialized in oils, pastels and collages with works that ranged from representational to abstract. Helen won awards at the Kenan Center, Lewiston Art Show, Niagara Society of Artists, Youngstown International Art show, the Bestor Art Show at the Chautauqua Institution and at Marine Midland Bank, Western. Mrs. Knox was a member of the Kenmore Art Society, the Niagara Society of Artists, and she volunteered with the blind and handicap art program at the Albright Knox Art Museum.
Along with her husband John, she loved to golf, camp, travel and square dance. Together, they were participants in the Senior Olympics, winning medals in shuffleboard.
Helen was the wife of 69 years to the late John B. Knox, Jr., who passed away in 2018.
She is survived by her children John B. (Deborah) Knox, III, Kevin (Suzanne) Knox, Cheryl Knox (William Jaback) and Sharon (Sean) Deuby, three grandchildren Jessica (Craig) Axford, Jennifer Knox and Connor Deuby, a great-granddaughter Eliana Axford, one sister Mildred (late John) Dooley, also many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Mary (Bob) Schimschack, Rose (Stanley) Lederhouse, Kitty (Edwin) Behnke, Anna Mittelstaedt, Frances (Larry) Broeker, John (Eloise) and Martin (Leonore) Cindrich.
Helen had an enduring and contagious zest for life. She loved her family and adored the community where she lived her entire life. Her wit and humor will be missed. Helen, we all love you and will, as you were so fond of saying, “listen up” when you sing with John from up on high!
Her family will be present on Friday, August 18, from 4-7 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Road, SANBORN, NY, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 AM, with the Pastor Joe Harmon officiating.
