WEST ISLIP — Donald R. Hoak, age 85, of West Islip, NY, formerly of Great Neck, NY, died on November 13, 2011, at age 85.
Don was born and grew up in Niagara Falls, NY. He was a Navy pilot in WWII, graduated from Buffalo State and Columbia University, and was a lifelong educator of vocational education.
Don retired as Director of Suffolk Co. (NY) BOCES. In retirement, he was active with Chapter #594 of the Experimental Aircraft Association in Farmingdale, NY, and chaired the Young Eagles program. He was instrumental in building an exact replica of the Wright Brothers Flyer, now on display at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY. He also volunteered with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation programs.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Theodore Hoak of Niagara Falls, NY; and his sister, Norrine Hasley of Sanborn, NY.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Judy (Richard) Lester, Brad (Wendy Smith) Hoak and James Hoak; grandchildren, James and Jason Lester, Grace and Rosa Hoak; sister, Shirley O’Callaghan of Niagara Falls, NY; brother, Harold Hoak of Brookfield, WI; and many nieces, nephews and their children.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal shelter or wildlife rescue organization.
