NORTH TONAWANDA — Harry R. Morath, Jr., 95, formerly of Maple Avenue, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2010 in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, NY, following a brief illness. Born on August 30, 1915 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Marie (Ruopp) Morath, Sr.
Mr. Morath was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. On December 2, 1939, Harry married the former Marian J. Goodman. She predeceased him in 1998 after 59 years of marriage. For 42 years, he worked for Niagara Mohawk, retiring in 1976 as a Traveling Operator. Mr. Morath was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. In 1939, Harry built a summer cottage (Camp HA-JU-MA-MA) at Rushford Lake, which became a special place where he enjoyed visits from family and friends. An avid fisherman, Harry was also known as an expert woodworker. During his retirement, he continued to use his woodworking skills enjoying building cabinets and displays at Goodman’s Farm Market for many years.
Mr. Morath is survived by two children, Judith (late Thomas) Rogers of Buena Vista, VA and Mark (Minda) Morath of State College, PA; six grandchildren, Tricia (James) DeSantis of Silver Creek, NY, Traci (Michael) Potter of Owego, NY, Jamie (Josh) Heynes of Fairview, PA, Mark (Erin) Morath II of Hughesville, PA, Megan Morath of State College, PA, and Laura (Jon) Fickinger of Burlington, KY; four great-grandchildren, Carli Potter, Preston Heynes and Kate and Andrew Fickinger and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Harry was predeceased by one sister, Geraldine (late Thomas) Goater. Also surviving is a special niece, Marlene Goater Mueller, who was a constant visitor and companion during Harry’s five years as a resident of ElderWood.
The family will be present to receive friends on Friday from 6-9 PM in the Chapel of the OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (297-9007), where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 6th at 10:00 AM, with Rev. Judy Huff officiating. Interment will follow in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda, NY. In lieu of flowers, consider The Rushford Historical Society, PO Box 254, Rushford, NY 14777.
