Robert Kerins Hubbert, age 48, of Ithaca, NY, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2015, while being held with love by his mom.
Rob was a lover of nature and revered hiking in the gorges of both Ithaca and Niagara Falls. He loved camping, long walks and playing and swimming in the streams with his boys.
One of the things Rob most enjoyed was playing the guitar for his family, while sitting by the stream at his house, with a campfire going and his dog by his feet. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Grateful Dead and enjoyed the unique, kind, creative, ways of his fellow Deadheads and the musical complexity of the band.
A graduate of Trumansburg High School in 1984, Rob next attended Niagara County Community College, where in addition to his studies, he made lifelong friendships and learned a love of yoga and Dungeons and Dragons.
Rob then transferred to Buffalo State University where he studied ceramics and graduated with a degree in art education. It wasn't long however, before he realized that his real gift was working with technology and in 1997 he became employed at Cornell University in the technology department at the School for Hotel Administration. That same year, he married his partner of three years, Shari Thomson.
Rob was a voracious learner, which made technology a perfect fit for his desire to constantly learn and grow. After ten years at the Hotel School, Rob moved into a senior technology position working on systems and security for Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; he worked there until 19 months ago, when his battle against cancer made it impossible to continue.
Rob was a creator and lover of beautiful art - be it ceramics, music, tie-dies or computer created images. He was a genuinely engaged and devoted father, husband and son. Most of all, Rob will be missed for his witty, honest sense of humor and deep intelligence, for his friendship, and for the love he so freely and beautifully gave.
He is survived by his parents, Margaret J. (Ross) and Robert L. Hubbert of Cortland, NY and Robert J. and Pamela (Folsom) Kerins of Lewiston, NY; his wife of 18 years, Shari (Thomson) Hubbert; his children Eli (12) and Nicholas (14); his mother-in-law, Patricia D. (Landis) Thomson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dianne E. (Thomson) and Steven P. Fleck; his nephew and niece, Steven P. Fleck Jr. and Annie Morgan T. Fleck; his brother-in-law, David J. Thomson II, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins who loved him dearly.
A Celebration of Life service is being arranged by the family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospicare of Ithaca, 172 East King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850, or the Tompkins County SPCA, 1640 Hanshaw Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
