WILSON — Ruth Caroline Shaffer, 89, died peacefully on Monday, November 21, 2011 at Viera Hospital. She was born on May 1, 1922 in Newfane, NY, to Walter M. and Lena (Donner) Rohring.
Ruth grew up on farms in Wilson, NY. After graduation from high school, she worked at Moore Business Forms in Niagara Falls. She served in the Women's Army Corps from 1945 to 1946 working in hospitals. On July 12, 1947 she married James C. Shaffer. They spent most of their life in Lewiston, NY. Ruth continued her education after starting a family. She graduated from Trott Vocational High School's practical nursing program and then worked as an LPN at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital until retirement. She was a member of the former Hope Lutheran Church, Town of Niagara and its Ladies Guild. In 1993, she and her husband moved to Melbourne, FL. In Florida she did respite volunteer work and enjoyed making crafts at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where she was a member.
Ruth is survived by her devoted family, including husband, James Shaffer; daughter Barbara of Arizona, Daughter Diane (Bernard) of California; son, Gary (Jane) of Maine; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; also survived by brothers, Donald of Largo, FL and Allen (Anne) of Wilson, NY; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Ruth leaves behind special friends, Jeanette Kroening and Huguette Pyska. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Walter; and great-granddaughter, Lyla Pyska.
There will be a visitation from 2-3 PM on Sunday, November 27th at Florida Memorial Funeral Home, where a funeral service will begin at 3 PM in the chapel. Entombment will be at Florida Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to National Kidney Foundation of Florida, NKF of Florida, Inc., 1040 Woodcock Rd., STE 119, Orlando, FL 32803-3510 or the American Diabetes Association, 1101 North Lake Destiny Road, STE 415, Maitland, Florida 32751.
