Niagara Gazette
BLOOMINGTON, IN — Donald F. Hahn, age 88, formerly of Lewiston, NY, died on August 10, 2012, at the Bell Trace Assisted Living facility in Bloomington, IN, where he had resided for the last 15 months.
Donald was born on October 2, 1923 in Waterville, OH, the son of Frederick and Lena Hahn. He was a 1942 graduate of Waterville High School in Waterville, OH. After graduation, Donald enlisted in the United States Army Air Force, becoming a crewman on a B-29 Super Fortress with the 20th Army Air Force, flying missions over China and Japan. On one such mission, the air crew had to "bail out" over China, was rescued and hidden by the Chinese, and returned over the Himalaya Mountains to their base in India. Donald kept the parachute that saved his life, shipped it home to his fiancee, Maribelle Fischer, who had her wedding dress made from that silk parachute. The dress has also served as the wedding gown for his daughter, Diane, and his daughter-in-law, Sandy. On a seam of the wedding dress remains a permanent inscription: "US Army Air Force". Donald was honorably discharged on September 5, 1945.
Donald was an avid bowler and golfer. He was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Lewiston and Niagara Presbyterian Church in the Town of Niagara.
Donald was predeceased by his wife, Maribelle Fischer Hahn, in June 1986, and his second wife, Mary Lou Etherington Hahn in December 2010. He is survived by his children, Gary Hahn (Nancy) of Roanoke, VA; Richard Hahn (Caryn) of Louisville, KY; Robert Hahn (Sandy) of Bloomington, IN; Diane Hahn McKenzie (Craig) of Richmond, VA; step-daughter, Charlene Sauer (Art) of Niagara Falls, NY, and step-son, Jeff Cicio of Largo, FL; grandchildren, Andrew, Ben, Daniel, Adam, Angela, Mallory, Kyle; step-grandchildren, Hailey, Austin, and great-grandchildren, Brianne, Alyssa, Aiden and Mia Ann.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Neville Funeral Home, 5052 Dorr Street, Toledo, OH (419) 535-0951. A memorial service will be held at the Neville Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at 10:00 AM, with interment at the Wakeman Cemetery in Waterville, OH, with military honors. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society of Bloomington, 2201 West Sudbury Drive, Suite C, Bloomington, IN 47403; or Messiah Lutheran Church, 915 Oneida Street, Lewiston, NY 14092.
Another member of the "Greatest Generation" has departed, but not before serving his country, his family and his faith. Rest in peace, Dad and Granddad.....you deserve it.
