NIAGARA FALLS — George Joseph Sawyer, 83, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away Monday, August 1, 2011. Born March 5, 1928 in Parsonville, PA, he was the son of the late John and Antonia Sawyer. He attended high school in Philipsburg, PA and was a 1945 graduate. After high school he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in Washington, being honorably discharged in 1947. Soon after his discharge he came to Niagara Falls to work at Kimberly Clark with his friends from back home. Taking the advice of his future father-in-law, Leon Zasucha, he joined the Niagara Falls Police Department in 1952, where he worked for 45 years. He retired as the oldest active Patrolman in New York State where he was lovingly referred to as “The Legend”.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Zasucha) Sawyer of Niagara Falls, NY; his son, John; daughter, Christina; grandchildren, Marina and Joseph; his sister, Jean of Flushing; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Stephen Michael; sisters, Mariam, Sophie and Anne.
There is no prior visitation. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC.
