Arch C. Scoby, 83 years old,
first probation officer and former
undersheriff of Niagara county,
who died last night at the family
home, at North Tonawanda,
after a lingering illness. Mr.
Scoby was one of the most
widely known residents of Niagara
county, especially among
the older residents. He had always
taken a keen interest in
North Tonawanda and Niagara
county affairs

of Best Known Residents
of County.
NORTH TONAWANDA.—Arch C.
Scoby, 83 years old, one of the best
known residents of Niagara county,
died last night at the family home,
Christiana and Vandervoort streets,
after a lingering illness.
Mr. Scoby was the first chief probation
officer of Niagara county and
served in that office from 1915 to
1935. when he retired. Previously
he was undersheriff. He was born
in Shiloh. Ohio, and at the age of
ten went to Watklns Glen. N. Y.. to
reside with an uncle. He graduated
from Cook's academy and when a
young man taught school for some
time.
He was also a prominent member
of the Niagara County Pioneers association
and served as its treasurer
for many years. He was compelled
to relinquish the office this year because
of failing health.
He was a charter member of the
Twin City Lawn Bowling club and
was its president over a long period
of years? In 1880 he married Mary
T. Swick. of Wilson. N. Y., and
for a number of years conducted a
farm In the Town Line road near
that village and later opened a
general store at "North Ridge.
He was school commissioner In Niagara
county for nearly 20 years
and a member of the B. P. O. Elks
and Odd Fellows. He came here to
reside 46 years ago.
He is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Claude E. Clarke, of Shaker
Heights. Ohio, a son. Hal A. Scoby.
of Fairport. N. Y.. two grandchildren
and wto sisters, Mrs. Frank Craig,
of Willard. Ohio, and Mrs. Cora
Stock well, of North Tonawanda. His
wife died about five years ago.
The funeral will be held Sunday
afternoon at 3 o'clock at the First
Baptist church In Vandervoort
st root.. The Rev. C. B. Hayden will
officiate and Interment will be at
North Ridge.
